MIFF 2024: Richie Mehta Discusses ‘Poacher’

The 18th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) saw celebrated filmmaker Richie Mehta, the director of “Delhi Crime” and most recently “Poacher,” in conversation with an eminent journalist. They discussed his journey of making both shows.

The Larger Cause Behind ‘Poacher’

Speaking at a packed auditorium at NMIC’s premises in Mumbai, Mehta revealed that his reason for backing “Poacher” was a larger cause than the conservation aspect the series highlighted. He expressed gratitude that the cause was achieved.

Importance of Research in Filmmaking

Mehta shared that his favourite part of making a show is the research. “My favourite part of the process is research because you get to know remarkable people and see flabbergasting stories. That’s where I learn about everything.”

Use of Technology Over Real Animals

He emphasized his commitment to not using real animals in the series. “There was no chance I was going to use real animals because it defeats the whole purpose and intention of the series. The technology has to be of a certain level to achieve that, and the artists from India did an amazing job. For me, that is a great sense of pride.”

Focus on Script and Acting

When quizzed by the audience on the content he would be keen on backing, Mehta said he focuses on the script and acting, which form the core. He emphasized pushing boundaries and using one’s position to highlight key issues. He is researching to take the idea further, focusing on ‘Big Cats.’

Challenges Faced

When asked if there was any fear while making “Poacher,” Mehta replied, “The only fear I had was whether I would be able to fulfil my promise to the wildlife team.”

Acknowledging the Team

Mehta acknowledged his team behind the much-talked-about series, calling on the ‘Poacher’ team present in the audience. The conversation was followed by the series’ red carpet screening, with filmmaker Richie Mehta, MD, NFDC Shri Pritul Kumar, and other dignitaries walking the red carpet.
