ED Investigates Manjummel Boys Producers.

ED Investigates ‘Manjummel Boys’ Producers for Alleged Money Laundering in Kerala’s Film Industry

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has sought legal advice to freeze the bank accounts of the producers and distributors of the film “Manjummel Boys” amidst allegations of inflating ticket collection figures for money laundering purposes. The ED is now gearing up to gather comprehensive financial information, including production costs, of all successful films produced in Kerala over the past five years.

This inquiry follows information from two filmmakers who reported alleged black money practices in Kerala’s theatre sector. The Malayalam film industry saw impressive box office collections, amassing Rs 720 crore in the first five months of 2024. Among the top earners, four films, including “Manjummel Boys,” “Aadujeevitham,” “Aavesham,” and “Premalu,” each crossed the Rs 100-crore mark.

The ED’s investigation into “Manjummel Boys” was triggered by disputes over profit sharing, leading to an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) against the producers under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Notices were sent to the founders of Parava Films, Soubin Shahir, Babu Shahir, and Shawn Antony, who were questioned by the ED.”Manjummel Boys,” which reportedly collected over Rs 220 crore at the box office, faced legal trouble when Siraj Valiyathara Hameed, a major investor, filed a cheating case against the makers.

Hameed alleged that Parava Films had promised him a 40 per cent share of the profits but failed to honour this agreement. As the ED delves deeper, the focus remains on uncovering the financial irregularities and ensuring compliance with the law.

This case highlights the ongoing efforts to address financial malpractice in the film industry and uphold integrity within the entertainment sector.
