English Movie A Quiet Place: Day One Review

A Quiet Place: Day One is a prequel to the highly successful franchise directed by John Krasinski. This film, directed by Michael Sarnoski, aims to tell the origin story of the alien invasion that set the stage for the first two movies. Despite its potential, it doesn’t quite reach the same level of suspense and excitement as the original films.

Rating: 1.5 Stars
Language: English
Genre: Horror, Thriller
Director: Michael Sarnoski
Starring: Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, Djimon Hounsou, Cain Aiden, Jennifer Woodward, and Elijah Ungvary.
Runtime: 100 Minutes
Available In: Theatres

Story and Characters:
The film starts by explaining that New York City is usually very noisy, with sound levels around 90 decibels. But when the aliens attack, everyone has to be completely silent to survive. The main characters, Samira (Lupita Nyong’o) and Eric (Joseph Quinn) are unprepared for this sudden change. Samira, a stage 4 cancer patient, and Eric, a young law student, struggle to adapt and survive.

Performances:
Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn deliver strong performances, making their characters engaging despite their flaws. However, the story doesn’t give us much background, making it hard to connect with their struggles fully.

Visuals and Sound:
The movie does a good job with visuals and sound design. The aliens look gruesome, and the city scenes effectively show the chaos and destruction caused by the invasion. However, the story lacks depth and consistency, without a strong reason for the alien invasion or the characters’ actions.

Plot Issues:
Several implausible elements exist in the story. For example, Samira’s dying wish to have a pizza during the alien invasion feels trivial and weakens the drama. The aliens’ reactions to sound are inconsistent, sometimes attacking at the slightest noise and other times ignoring obvious sounds. Even Samira’s cat, Frodo, behaves uncharacteristically quiet throughout the film.

Overall:
A Quiet Place: Day One is a decent thriller but doesn’t match the intensity and suspense of the original films. It offers some engaging moments, mainly due to the strong performances by Nyong’o and Quinn, but it leaves much to be desired in terms of story and character development. Seeing the origin story might be worth watching if you are a franchise fan. However, don’t expect the same level of thrill and suspense as the first two movies.
