The prestigious Tasveer Film Festival (TFF), recognized as the premier South Asian film festival in the United States, is gearing up for its 19th edition, set to take place from October 17 to 20, 2024. Known for showcasing bold and diverse South Asian voices, Tasveer has become a prominent cultural event, particularly after receiving Oscar-qualifying status in 2023.
Shaunak Sen Leads an Esteemed Jury
This year’s Tasveer Film Festival jury is led by Shaunak Sen. He is the Academy Award-nominated filmmaker of All That Breathes. Sen is joined by Geeta Patel, the Emmy-nominated director of House of the Dragon and Ahsoka. Omi Vaidya, known for his role in 3 Idiots, also joins the panel. Elham Ehsas, the BAFTA-nominated director of Yellow, is another prominent member.
Diverse Expertise in the Jury Panel
The jury includes Kanak Mani Dixit, a journalist and civil rights activist from Nepal. Samia Zaman, a Bangladeshi producer, is also part of the team. Beena Sarwar, a journalist and human rights advocate, brings her experience. Arshad Khan, an award-winning Canadian filmmaker, is also on the jury. Saket Saurabh, a celebrated cinematographer, adds further expertise. Priya Vashist, a professor and filmmaker, specializes in queer South Asian narratives.
A Global Stage for South Asian Narratives
The festival has received nearly 500 submissions from across the world. Submissions came from countries like the UK, Portugal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and the U.S. This year’s event focuses on female empowerment, LGBTQIA+ issues, and resilience. Themes of masculinity, elderly experiences, and euthanasia are also explored.

Shaunak Sen spoke about Tasveer’s role in amplifying South Asian voices. He expressed his pride in returning as President of the jury. He sees it as an honor to contribute to the festival’s important mission.
Grand Award Ceremony with Oscar Potential
The festival will conclude on October 20, 2024. The ceremony will take place at Seattle’s PACCAR IMAX Theater. Key awards include Best Feature Narrative, Best Documentary, and Audience Choice Awards. The winning short film will qualify for the 2025 Academy Awards.
