When Rakesh Roshan Admitted He ‘Failed as an Actor’ and Wanted Son Hrithik Roshan to ‘Live My Dreams’

As veteran actor-filmmaker Rakesh Roshan celebrates his 75th birthday on September 6, it’s a perfect time to revisit a heartfelt moment from his career. Known for starring in 84 films, including classics like Khubsoorat (1980) with Rekha and Kaamchor (1982) with Jaya Prada, Rakesh became a prominent figure in Bollywood. However, his biggest successes came as a director, with iconic films like Khoon Bhari Maang (1988), Karan Arjun (1995), and the Krrish series starring his son Hrithik Roshan.

Rakesh Roshan Reflects on Hrithik Roshan’s Career

In an old interview with DNA, Rakesh Roshan opened up about his acting career and how his son Hrithik fulfilled the dreams he couldn’t achieve. Rakesh said, “He (Hrithik) has worked really hard. I failed as an actor. But like any parent, I wanted my son to live my dreams. Hrithik has done the things I could not do in my life. He’s a superstar, idolised by many across the world. But above all, he is my son, making me proud every day.”

Rakesh reflected on Hrithik’s career journey, acknowledging the ups and downs his son faced. “He has had his ups and downs in his career, and I feel it should always happen because that’s how he will learn from his mistakes,” Rakesh added.

Hrithik Roshan’s Early Career and Strict Parenting

Rakesh Roshan shared how Hrithik’s filmmaking journey began right after college when he chose to work as an assistant director rather than pursue special effects studies abroad. Their first collaboration was the hit film Karan Arjun (1995), starring Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan.

Recalling his parenting style, Rakesh admitted, “I was very strict with Hrithik. On set, he wasn’t my son but just another assistant. He would travel with the other ADs, share rooms with them, and have meals together. I wanted him to learn the value of hard work.”

Hrithik went on to assist his father in films like Khel (1992) and Koyla (1997) before making his acting debut in Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai (2000), which became an instant hit and solidified Hrithik as one of Bollywood’s biggest stars.

Upcoming Projects: Krrish 4 and The Roshans Documentary

Rakesh Roshan is currently working on the fourth installment of the Krrish franchise, which will once again feature Hrithik in the lead role. A documentary titled The Roshans is also in the works, shedding light on the Roshan family’s illustrious career, including Rakesh, Rajesh Roshan, and Hrithik. Shah Rukh Khan recently shot for the documentary, which will be released early next year.

Rakesh Roshan’s journey from actor to filmmaker has been one of resilience and evolution. While he admits he “failed as an actor,” his son Hrithik has fulfilled his dreams, achieving global stardom. As Rakesh continues to work on exciting projects like Krrish 4 and The Roshans documentary, his legacy in Bollywood remains as strong as ever.
